Galaxy Music Awards (GMA) 2020 — “The Alternative Industry”

Music lovers across the South-South and South-East regions of Nigeria are in for a major treat as the stage is set for the 2020 Galaxy Music Awards (GMA), scheduled for December.

GMA 2020

In a statement released to the media, the Convener and CEO of Galaxy360 Media, Mr. Stanley Godfrey Azubuike, announced that the 2020 edition marks the third installment of the prestigious awards — following two successful outings that celebrated some of the region’s finest musical talents.

Originally focused on Port Harcourt-based artists, the GMA has now expanded to cover the entire South-South and South-East regions, a move aimed at building what Azubuike described as “an alternative entertainment industry.”

“At the GMAs, we are passionate about the South-South and South-East — capitalizing on our massive talent pool, unique culture, lifestyle, and immense creative potential,” Azubuike stated. “For a country of over 200 million people, one thriving entertainment hub is simply not enough.”

With a combined population of nearly 50 million people across both regions, Azubuike noted that it was time for the South to have its own fully developed entertainment ecosystem.

Adapting to the Times

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Galaxy Music Awards introduced a new, adaptive format — combining a virtual ceremony with terrestrial television broadcast to maintain safety and accessibility.

With a targeted 50 million viewers, the event will be aired on DStv and GOtv, bringing the experience directly into the homes of fans across Nigeria and beyond.

Building a Legacy

Referencing a quote from American filmmaker Tyler Perry“While others looked for a seat at the table, I built a table” — Azubuike remarked that the statement perfectly reflects the spirit behind the GMAs.

“Over here, we’re building a platform for the Down South’s entertainment industry from the ground up,” he said.

Theme: The Alternative Industry

This year’s theme, “The Alternative Industry,” highlights GMA’s mission to establish an independent, vibrant, and sustainable creative scene for the South.
Key developments tied to this initiative include the upcoming launch of the Galaxy Xtreme Music Channel and the GX Music App — a new digital streaming platform built to promote regional artists globally.
